Alexander Snegirev obtained MEng (1986) and PhD (1992) degrees in Thermal Physics at St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU), Russia, for his computational and experimental studies of solid fuel combustion. He was then focused on research in diffusion combustion and heat transfer in fires, working closely with fire communities in Russia and UK. From 1998 to 2005 he was a Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Research in Fire and Explosion Studies, University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), UK. For his work on modeling and simulations of combustion, heat, and mass transfer in fires, A. Snegirev was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science (SPbPU). From 2005 to 2022 he held the posts of Associate Professor and Professor at the Department of Fluid Dynamics Combustion and Heat Transfer of SPbPU and was awarded by the title of Full Professor by the Russian Ministry of Science and Education in 2022. He delivered teaching modules on heat transfer, combustion, fire dynamics and CFD for BEng and MEng students. His research activity resulted in successful research projects funded by industry (GM, Airbus, Microsoft, Boeing) and governmental bodies in Russia (Russian Fund for Basic Research, Russian Science Foundation), UK (EPSRC, Royal Society), and Belgium (CWO).
In 2018-2021, he was the lead Russian collaborator for the BRE (Flamenco) orbital experiment run by NASA and the University of Maryland (US) onboard the International Space Station to study extinction of diffusion flames in microgravity. His research results on combustion and fire modeling, droplet evaporation and flame-spray interaction, microscale combustion calorimetry, pyrolysis of combustible materials, and flame spread modeling have been widely published.
In 2022, A. Snegirev joined research group supervised by Prof. B. Merci in Ghent University, Belgium, where he developed a novel subgrid combustion model (SCM) for LES of buoyant turbulent diffusion flames and performed fully coupled simulations of flame spread over combustible surfaces in normal and microgravity.
